Faraday Centre Visit

At the Faraday Centre we had a talk about Matariki. We looked at light and gravity with Jenny, the teacher from the MTG.

Trying out what it would feel like to walk in a place with lots of gravity.

Inquiry Term 1 Keeping ourselves safe

Mrs Monteith's group discussed the difference between open and closed questions. They gave us some examples then asked the class if they could tell the difference.

Ms Holyoake's class showed us a video they had made about keeping ourselves safe on the crossing.

Mr McLeans group also showed us a video about road safety. This group discussed about how road rules keep us all safe.

Ms Trubshaw's group shared their research about pedestrian crossing safety.

They talked about the learning process they followed during their study.
We have been so lucky to have the student teachers from EIT to help us with these interesting activities.

In science we are learning about the water cycle.

Each group is studying a different aspect of how we keep ourselves safe in our community.
Here are some of the activities we have been doing.

Word studies

Word studies

Our expert spellers presented their word studies.

Our first 'expert' presented his word really effectively using children from the class to hold rubbish items to write his synonyms on. His word was 'garbage'.

Our second expert presented his word on a brainstorm chart.

Talking about pesticides (how to keep ourselves safe).

Today Kate and Jean from Massey University came to talk to us today about what pesticides are, what they do and how to keep ourselves safe from the harmful effects of pesticides.

Kate and Jean asked us to help them by filling out a survey that they are doing. The survey is help them with their research into the effects of pesticides.  A notice about this will be sent home soon.

Senior swimming sports.

Everyone who participated in this should be so proud of their efforts. I know you all tried so hard to succeed. I was especially impressed by the stone divers. That was so hard for many of you and you all gave it your best shot.
An extra special congratulations too, to our class relay team. You represented our class amazingly well.

Science

Today we started Science with Mrs O'Leary.

Water Safety

Water Safety with Chris was fun.

We learned how to put on a life jacket in the water.

We learned how to support each other by 'huddling'.

We finished by forming a line in our groups and supporting each other to float on our backs.

Tuesday, 9 February 2016

We started Kapa Haka with Mr Bassett today too.

Our first percussion lesson.

Lachie thought 'it was really exciting because it was like learning a new language'.  Liam thought the way Samuel the tutor could make sounds out of pipes and tins was 'really terrific'.
